Rebecca Graff and Tom Ruggieri farm 5 acres using sustainable practices within the Graff family farm. Crops include annual vegetables, strawberries, asparagus, herbs and a flock of 100 laying hens. The farm operates a passive solar greenhouse for transplant production and a 30 x 96 ft. high tunnel for an extended CSA season.
Hours: 20 – 40 hours per week March 1st through October 31st. We would like to hire one full-time person at 40 hours, or two individuals at 20 hours each. Employment will cover the eight months of the growing season with additional hours possible during the winter if desired and depending on farm needs.
Compensation: Based on experience, one week paid vacation and extra produce as available and on request.
Job Description: The farm worker will join the farm crew of two farmers and other staff in all aspects of operating a successful, reputable and professional organic farm, including: the production of greenhouse transplants; seeding, transplanting and cultivation of field crops; maintenance and use of farm machinery; soil fertility management including the application of compost, minerals and the growing of cover crops; organic management of weeds, pests and disease; drip-irrigation system set-up and maintenance; harvest, packing and storage of 40 different fruits and vegetables including proper food safety practices; management of the flock of 100 pastured laying hens; planting and tending to high tunnel crops; and friendly interactions with the rest of the farm crew and with the 100 CSA member families that come to the farm throughout the season.
The ideal applicant has a deep commitment to sustainability and organic agriculture, has at least one year of experience in crop production, is a hard-worker, is self-motivated and works well with others. Farm work is often dirty and tiring – hot in the Summer and cold in the Spring and Fall. A sense of humor and a good frame of mind are key to a successful career in sustainable agriculture.
